Sakhalin Western Seaport welcomed guests of international festival of national cultures.

On September 19th, 2014 Sakhalin Western Seaport welcomed dear guests – participants of international festival of national cultures “Sodruzhestvo-2014” :  folklore group "Krupitskiye muzyki” (Belarus Republic), State Dancing Ensemble "Vainakh" (Chechen republic), ethno-group "Aiarhaan" (Sakha Republic, Yakutia). Guests were escorted by SWSP manager Valeriy Gaidamak.

Artists were shown Sakhalin Marine Gates – the main pride of City of Seamen and told about port history. Guests got to know, that in 1920 there was fish port Maoka. Convenient location of harbor and berths structure protected vessels against storms and winds. The port doesn’t freeze and there can be all year round navigation. Therefore, there were challenging times in the history of port. After failure of Soviet Union, when economic system underwent serious transformation.   Most of all big industrial companies suffered  and Sakhalin fish port overcame bankruptcy and decline.   New beginning of the port was in 2002 and it was given by JV LLC “Sakhalin-Shelf-Service” by building Sakhalin Western Seaport instead of old Kholmsk fishing port.

Today it is the most modern port in Sakhalin region. It is the only port on Far East specialized on supporting oil and gas projects.
Observing port operations and listening to the story of Valeriy Gaidamak, the guests could hardly believe, that such significant strategic facility was reconstructed out of ruins within the shortest period of time – only year and a half. Berths were repaired, dredging works conducted, wrecked vessels were taken out from the depth.  Expansion and dredging of access channel up to 10 meters let ice-class vessels and big transportation vessels call in the port.   New warehouses and operations facilities, equipped in the most modern way, were built instead of demolished facilities and buildings.

Port expansion is still ongoing, - said Gaidamak.  It is planned to reconstruct and equip vessel repairmen plant shops, arrange new territories for unloading fuel from tankers.  It will allow us to provide storage services and guarantee continuous fuel bunkering in the port. It is much safer and better than bunkering at anchorage.
